Ceramic fiber round braided rope is a high-temperature sealing product made from high-purity ceramic fiber as raw material through a multi-strand braiding process. It is widely used in valve packing, flange sealing, pipeline thermal insulation, and high-temperature thermal isolation components in industrial furnaces and kilns. Its long-term operating temperature can reach above 1000°C, and it possesses excellent properties such as low thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, in actual use, improper operation can not only affect the sealing performance but also pose safety hazards. The following summarizes the precautions for use from four aspects: selection, operation, protection, and storage.
I. Selection and Specification Matching
When selecting ceramic fiber round braided rope, it is necessary to make a reasonable selection based on the operating temperature, medium characteristics, and sealing component dimensions. For valve stuffing boxes, a specification slightly larger than the box clearance should be chosen; if too thin, the seal will be inadequate, and if too thick, compression becomes difficult and may damage the rope body. For flange sealing, a specification with a cross-section matching the flange clearance should be selected to ensure uniform filling after compression. In high-temperature applications involving corrosive media, chromium-containing or high-alumina reinforced products should be selected to enhance erosion resistance.II. Installation and Operating Standards
Before installation, the appearance of the rope body should be inspected for any visible broken filaments, loosening, or moisture traces. When packing valve stuffing, the rope should be pressed in ring by ring with staggered joints, and adjacent cuts should be offset by 90° to 120° to avoid forming a direct leakage channel. The compression force should be applied uniformly and progressively; never apply excessive force in a single step, as this may cause the rope body to shatter. When wrapping for flange sealing, the rope should fit tightly and be arranged neatly without twisting or folding. After installation, the initial heating should be carried out slowly to allow the material to gradually adapt to thermal expansion, thereby reducing the risk of thermal shock cracking.III. Personal Protection and Safety
Ceramic fiber is a synthetic mineral fiber. Skin contact may cause irritation and itching, and inhalation of dust can irritate the respiratory tract. Construction personnel should wear dust masks, safety goggles, and long-sleeved work clothing to minimize exposed skin contact. Cutting operations should be performed in well-ventilated areas to prevent dust from becoming airborne. After work, personnel should wash their hands and change clothes promptly, and work clothing should never be worn into living areas. Waste materials should be disposed of in accordance with industrial solid waste regulations and must not be discarded arbitrarily.IV. Storage and Shelf-Life Management
Ceramic fiber round braided rope should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated indoor area, away from damp surfaces and corrosive chemicals, and protected from direct sunlight and rain to prevent fiber aging or strength degradation. Product packaging should be kept intact, and items should be stacked by specification classification to prevent compression deformation. During long-term storage, the appearance should be inspected periodically; materials that are severely dampened or show signs of powdering or fracture should not be used for critical sealing applications.V. Operation and Maintenance Requirements
After being put into service, the leakage status and temperature changes at sealing locations should be inspected regularly. When looseness in the packing gland or leakage is detected, timely re-compression or replacement should be performed; the equipment must not be operated in a defective condition. When replacing packing during the major overhaul cycle of high-temperature valves, the residual materials inside the stuffing box should be thoroughly cleaned to ensure that new packing is installed on a clean surface, thereby restoring reliable sealing performance. In summary, ceramic fiber round braided rope offers outstanding performance, but its effectiveness is closely related to the standardization of operating practices. Strict selection, standardized installation, proper protection, appropriate storage, and regular maintenance are the key elements to ensure the long-term reliable operation of high-temperature sealing.
